Back in November, Brewer and Distiller International caught up with Brewers Association CEO at BrauBeviale in Nuremberg. Has the BA's view changed on cannabis since Bart Watson's (BA's Chief Economist) paper of a couple of years ago, which suggested it was no threat to craft beer? The world has moved on since then, with legalisation in more US states as well as Canada. No, not really. We follow this very closely obviously. There are a lot of deep threats to beer; cannabis, wine, spirits ... and iPhones, but so far no data to support the thesis that the legalisation of cannabis has cut into craft beer sales. But I say this with the caveat that it is still early ... in cannabis states, such as Colarado, beer sales are up ... but there are lots of things that a beer drinker can now do with their disposable income, and cannabis is just another one. Cannabis is no more a threat than the other threats to craft beer, but there is no evidence that it is affecting sales at the moment.
