Ohe National Geographic photographer and adventurer Cory Richards just got back from Everest. This was his fourth trip and he didn't make it to the top, but he's done that twice already. With rugged mountain-boy good looks, bright blue eyes and scruffy hair, he talks honestly about his successes and failures in mountaineering - and in life. In May, Richards attempted to climb the mountain's Northeast Ridge from Tibet, a route that is deemed the toughest and most challenging. He climbed without Sherpas and without oxygen, accompanied only by his Ecuadorian climbing partner, Esteban "Topo" Mena, who Richards says is "closer to me than my own brother." Their plan was to create a new route, the first one devised in more than 10 years.
