ANNE HORTON REPORTS ON THE NEW YORK FALL AUCTIONS

New York's fall auction season opened Tuesday morning, October 9, with a poignant memorial service for John Szarkowski at the MOMA, where he so brilliantly curated the photography department for 29 years (see B&W Issue 54 for his obituary). Invitations were coveted, every seat was filled, and the speakers included Peter Galassi, Szarkowski's student, friend and successor; his two daughters, Natasha Szarkowski Brown and Nina Szarkowski Jones; Mark Haworth-Booth, former director of photographs at London's Victoria and Albert Museum; and Lee Friedlander. After the service, a lovely buffet luncheon gave friends and colleagues-many of whom had not seen each other for years-a chance to reminisce.
