Art brut," meaning raw or rough art, was coined by Jean Dubuffet to describe art created outside the boundaries of official culture, particularly the art created by inmates incarcerated in mental institutions. Dubuffet wrote that "art brut" referred to "those works created from solitude and from pure and authentic creative impulses-where the worries of competition, acclaim and social promotion do not interfere."
