The San Francisco Bay Area has long been an important center for creative photography. Pioneers like Carleton Watkins and Edweard Muybridge were based in San Francisco and were noted for their explorations of the wild, wild West. Later, the likes of Arnold Genthe, Imogen Cunningham and Dorothea Lange produced important bodies of work centered on this spectacular region. Ansel Adams grew up in San Francisco, and was instrumental in founding the pioneering Group f64 in Oakland, whose influences rippled exponentially throughout the photographic world (and continue to this day).
