Sunstruck: Southern California Expressionism

Beginning in the 19th century, Northern California has had a long tradition of landscape photography dedicated to a sense of place. Most of its practitioners live(d) in the San Francisco area, a city with a unique topography that also appeared in their images. Among them are Carleton Watkins, William Henry Jackson, Eadweard Muybridge, Arnold Genthe, Anne Brigman, Edward Weston, Imogen Cunningham, Ansel Adams, Linda Connor, Richard Misrach, Michael Rauner and Noah Wilson, to name a few. Images of place anchor these artists' identities squarely in the landscape tradition of a region wildly and uniquely picturesque.
