Although the career of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) is inextricably linked with the New York art scene of the late 1970s and '80s, it is now the city of Los Angeles than can lay claim to being the primary center for an understanding and appreciation his life and work. Earlier this year, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the J. Paul Getty Trust announced their joint acquisition of a substantial collection of Mapplethorpe's photographic prints, negatives, documents and personal correspondence.
