One of the most compelling, if overlooked, aspects of photography is the fact that it can speak so many different languages. By that I'm not referring to a universal visual language that can be more or less comprehended by people in different countries who speak different languages. To cite an obvious example, the narrative content in an image like Robert Doisneau's "La Dame Indignee, 1948" - in which a strait-laced woman gazing into a Paris art gallery is visibly and disagreeably shocked by a prominently displayed painting of a nude - is universally apparent.
