12 new biometric standards enhance industry

Biometric Services International (BSI), a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Biometric Security Project, has reviewed biometric standards activity in a publication called "Summary of Published and Emerging Biometrics Standards". According to the company, progress in biometrics standardization since the last report, issued in June 2007, has been significant with 12 new standards published bringing the total number of published standards to 64. The report details these, along with an additional 70 emerging standards currently under consideration. The authors of the report say that numerous application areas will see improvement in functionality because of the newly published biometric standards. Face Recognition Standard amendments add support for 3D range images and specify how to take photographs for optimal face recognition performance.
