Quality of Service: Part 1

If you've ever seen poor video quality while watching a video clip at a website or experienced missing bits or a broken conversation on a network telephone (as in VoIP—Voice over Internet Protocol), you've experienced poor Quality of Service (QoS). QoS is a networking term that simply means getting the right packet to the right place at the right time. As you might imagine, there are lots of ways to increase the level of network QoS.nnQoS fundamentals will be presented in two installments of IT World. In Part I, we will talk about basic concepts and why it is an important concept to understand in healthcare IT. However, QoS can quickly get very complex, as it refers to a broad list of networking technologies and techniques. In its complexity, it's not easy to describe all possible aspects of a QoS implementation in one example. Therefore, we will save the details of QoS protocols for Part II. You can get a sense of what will be discussed in Part II by taking a look at the four main protocol groups listed in Table 2.
