摘要

Since the early 1990s, significant developments have been made in techniques for reducing the level of intervention in surgical procedures. Laparoscopic surgery, also called minimally invasive surgery, is considered the most significant advancement in surgery over the last decade. Procedures based on laparoscopic techniques offer little blood loss, fast healing, and minimal scarring. Their use is gaining ground in everything from abdominal surgeries to treatment of heart disease and cancer.nnIn the mid-1990s, the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands began developing a series of research centers to pursue focused investigations in a variety of fields. The authors of the papers in this book are on the faculty of the university in the Man-Machine Systems Group. Their research has applied industrial engineering principles to surgical tools and techniques.
