In a healthcare facility, “safety” takes on many guises. Security officers make sure the building itself is safe and secure. Information technology professionals protect critical data from harm. And clinical engineers and biomedical equipment technicians ensure that the right medical equipment is selected, used, and maintained. Sometimes, though, a clinical engineering department has the opportunity to be involved in a system that goes beyond the traditional role of “device,” but is vital to the safety of patients.
