Bio-oil produced from fast pyrolysis of biomass is considered to be a potential substitute for traditional transport fuels (gasoline and diesel). However, crude bio-oil has disadvantages, including high water content (15-30%), high oxygen content (35-40%), low heating value (16-19 MJ/Kg) and low pH (~2.5) [U]; therefore, upgrading is very necessary for bio-oil high-grade utilization.
