With so much talk about European proposals limiting food-based biofuels to 5.5%, the race is on to secure sustainable alternative processes to produce advanced biofuels. Hydro-treated vegetable oil (HVO) or renewable diesel, is produced using a different process to the traditional trans-esterification. In the HVO production process, hydrogen is used to remove the oxygen from the triglyceride (vegetable oil) and integration to an existing oil refinery is preferred for small plants. Additional chemicals, like methanol for FAME-production, are not needed and the process does not produce any glycerol as a side product.
