Both the Asian and American Lotus—spectacular water lilies—are widely raised as ornamentals for their very showy flowers and huge floating leaves, but many in the Western World do not realize that they are also of major importance spiritually and as sources of food. Increased use of these remarkable plants requires careful planning because they can degrade biodiversity-rich wetland communities when introduced outside their native ranees. The Asian Lotus is one of the most sacred plants. It is considered divine in Asian and Oriental cultures, symbolizing perfection, immortality and enlightenment. Often called the Sacred Lotus or Sacred Lotus of India, it is revered by Buddhists and Hindus, who carve Lotus flower ornaments into their religious buildings. The Asian Lotus is the national flower of India, and is depicted on India's national emblem. It is also the sacred flower of Buddhism, symbolizing purity and divine birth. The Buddha is often shown sitting on a Lotus in bloom. The rise of the flower from its watery environment is symbolic of the evolution of human consciousness. In China, Lotus roots and seeds are used as good luck charms. The American Lotus also has a long spiritual tradition. It is considered sacred by several Native American cultures and is said to have mystic powers.
