The unmanned merchant ship: far-fetched science fiction or a Dromisinq future?

Unmanned ships would certainly help to solve the problem of getting enough qualified crew and may also reduce operational costs, particularly for slow steaming ships. However, there are many problems to be solved and much scepticism to overcome before this can become a reality. The Maritime Unmanned Navigation through Intelligence in Networks (MUNIN) project investigates these issues and tries to develop implementable concepts for the unmanned ship. A key challenge is to allow the mariners to stay ashore, while keeping them in the operational loop.
