Varied Shoulder Retrofits Reduce Maintenance Costs

Determined to improve overall maintenance cost while improving safety of shoulders, the Orange County Roads and Drainage Division in Florida implemented a maintenance program by which shoulders on arterials and collectors are designed with a width of 6 to 10 feet to provide a safe recovery area for traffic. This maintenance program significantly increased the level of safety on all Orange County roads and reduced the maintenance costs associated with them. Having the program in place demonstrates from a legal perspective that Orange County is reasonably responsive to the needs and safety of the public.
