The paper demonstrates the potential of the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)based numerical simulations for optimising cement kiln flames. The objective of the work was to assess the quality of the predictions using the experimental data generated within the CEMFLAME project carried out at the IFRF (International Flame Research Foundation). Flames of a medium volatile bituminous coal (mvb-coal) and a flexi-coke have been computed to examine the model ability to handle different fuels. A comprehensive sensibility analysis has been carried out to examine the relative importance of various sub-models. Importance of a correct fuel characterisation for quality predictions has been clearly demonstrated. The paper contains an assessment of the model abilities.
