Back in the good old days of the Gordon Bennett Cup, before racing teams were sponsored by tobacco and fizzy pop, cars were painted a simple colour based on where they came from. There was red for the Italians (who actually stole it from the Americans), grey-white for Germany (hence 'silver arrows'), yellow for the Belgians and blue for the French. Great Britain didn't join in until later and, with the Union Jack colours allocated elsewhere, instead settled on green... in honour of the Irish, but that's another story.
