Operation of Soviet geophysicists during the Great Patriotic War (to the 65th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War) 1945-2010

The Research Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism (NIIZM) was organized before the Great Patriotic War (in 1939) on the base of the branches of the Main Geophysical Observatory (GGO) in Leningrad and Slutsk (at present, Pavlovsk). The institute was organized in order to study the constant magnetic field of the Earth and investigate and predict geomagnetic and ionospheric disturbances. NIIZM became the leading organization aimed at coordinating the operation of magnetic observatories in the country.
