As the ewozone crisis worsened and regulatory reform dosed in, 2011 put banks' resilience to the test. The Banker's 12th Bank of the Year Awards celebrates those banks that have risen to the challenge, displaying innovation and economic efficiency. Banking chief executives must have been hoping that in 2011 financial markets would once and for all shake off the effects of the global crisis, which begun back in 2007. Instead, it has been one of the toughest years many of them will have experienced, with turmoil in the eurozone debt markets, concerns over US economic growth and fears about China's banking system all resulting in a bearish atmosphere.
