Sir Brian Pitman, legendary former chairman of Lloyds Bank, used to say that a bank's board should concentrate on three questions: how to deliver the reasonable demands of shareholders; how to secure the lowest cost of capital; and - the most difficult - how to make sure the bank had a future.rnProfessor Bob Garraft likes to quote the late Pitman, whom he greatly admired. Garratt, a specialist on board effectiveness and corporate governance who advises widely and internationally, is a visiting professor at London's Cass Business School. He insists that, as part of safeguarding the future, directors must take a critical view of business models and be prepared to say no to misguided executive proposals.
