Nigerian SEC chief suspended

The suspension of the director-general of Nigeria's Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Arunma Oteh, has highlighted the tensions and bitter feuding at the SEC. Ms Oteh, who took on the role in January 2010, set out to clean up Nigeria's capital markets and drive out corruption. Widely regarded as an outspoken reformer, Ms Oteh had made public allegations of corruption against senior figures in Nigeria. In June, the SEC board suspended her on the advice of a parliamentary committee, which had looked into allegations that she had misused funds from 'Project 50', a programme to commemorate 50 years of stock market regulation in Nigeria.
