Big Data - the rapidly growing amount of data available to banks today - is difficult to manage. But once it can be controlled and analysed, the benefits for bank and customer can be truly rewarding. However, there is a giant obstacle in the way of the onward march of Big Data. It is Big Paper. Although banks have discarded many of their paper-based processes over the years, paper is still very much in use. People have been talking about "the paperless office" for years, but it simply does not exist. Hewlett-Packard (HP), the California-headquartered multinational IT corporation, is at the vanguard of the war on paper. "About 50% of processes across banking still involve paper," says Simon Reynolds, Business Development Director, EMEA, at HP. "Data is still being generated in paper format, but we're helping banks reduce that.
