South Africa fires minister

South Africa's president, Jacob Zuma, has fired the country's minister of finance, Nhlanhla Nene. Reasons for the dismissal remain unclear. The office of the presidency stated Mr Nene was nominated for a position at the Brics development bank. Yet, according to the Financial Times, Mr Nene was unaware of this nomination. Mr Nene's dismissal was followed by the appointment of an unknown backbencher, David van Rooyen, who held the position for just three days before he was also replaced.
