BANKS EVERYWHERE ARE FEELING THE PAIN of the economic fallout from Covid-19. Of particular concern is the health of global systemically important banks, or G-SIBs. As the G-SIB tag implies, trouble in any of these banks has implications beyond the impact on a single institution. With two quarters of results to analyse, The Banker's data team has been crunching the numbers using our 'best-performing banks' model and in this month's cover story (page 20), Marie Kemplay analyses what they show for North American and European players. While banks with capital markets, as well as lending, income fare best, all banks have moved swiftly to provision against future credit losses. Usually at this time of the year, The Bankers editors are setting off to attend the annual Sibos and International Monetary Fund (IMF) meetings. This year both will be virtual events, so our participation will be online. But this hasn't stopped us putting together special issues to mark the occasions starting with our Sibos coverage in this issue, to be followed by IMF editorial in October.
