The US Federal Reserve left interest rates untouched in December 2019 and signalled that, should economic conditions remain broadly stable in 2020, there would be no change to monetary policy over the coming year. In response, US stocks moved higher while Treasury yields fell below 1.8%. Fed chairman Jerome Powell noted that the US economic outlook was favourable, despite headwinds in the global economy.
