The iconic four-wheel-drive Jeep of World War II has undergone decades of upgrades to become the modern SUV. Now the classic landing craft that landed on the beaches of Normandy and the islands of the Pacific has undergone a similar upgrade at the South East Asia Shipyard in Vietnam. Named 'Hirundo' - Latin for "swallow" - the revised and updated craft offers the potential for improved access to many areas worldwide that are too small for a conventional container port. The advent of containerised shipping has put many small island and coastal communities at a disadvantage when shipping products such as locally caught fish, or importing consumer goods.
