Many years ago, there was an appalling fire aboard a new building container ship in a German shipyard, which cost the lives of a lot of shipyard workers. Most died when the insulation on the hatches of the first-generation container ship caught fire, after it ignited from a welding spark, with enormous heat and toxic smoke. They didn't have a chance. Heads were shaken wisely after this tragic event; lessons would be learned. The only trouble was that lessons had been learned years before in coal mining, where a similar accident with the insulating material had cost lives, but had never made the industry leap to shipbuilding.
