No, I'm not being cryptic. Crypsis, it's plain to see from a dictionary, is about making things hard to see. It falls within the camouflage category, and camo is on my mind this month. Never mind the irony, but some recent photos of boats with camouflage paint jobs caught my eye. The first made some sense to me: a naval ship trying to hide seems a natural enough desire and certainly a long way from being a precedent. Whether the new paintwork on USS 'Freedom' makes it any harder to spot, I don't know. "Haze grey and underway" is a phrase the sailors from stateside used to say, and if plain grey has worked well enough, for so many, for so long, one wonders if the new livery could be a case of breaking the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" axiom.
