"Broadcasting" video over the Internet is not a new idea, but it is begin-ning to make inroads this year as three forces come together: 1. Broadband penetration among consumers will top 50% this year, tipping online video over the line into a mass medium. 2. Advertisers are moving more of their marketing dollars online. According to the Interactive Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers, Internet advertising revenues during the first six months of this year reached a record level of $5.8 billion, a 26% increase over the first half of 2004. (Video advertising, which falls within the rich media segment that represents 8% of online advertising revenue, is not broken out separately by the LAB.) 3. Video advertising is a familiar medium to consumers and advertisers alike. That feeling of comfort is cemented with online video players that look alike and act alike, providing a consistent experience for viewers, advertisers and agencies.
