Two years ago, Airbus and Boeing launched their own aviation data analytics platforms, which were designed to help airlines improve operational efficiency by leveraging the unprecedented amounts of digital information generated by today's aircraft. The idea was that the analysis of "big data" across different categories would enable airlines to predict and address potential problems before they arose, resulting in fewer flight delays, less aircraft-on-ground time, more productive crewmembers and better inventory control. Both airframers report positive initial results and predict "big opportunities" ahead, as new categories are added and more data become available. Neither believes data ownership and control to be a controversial issue, pointing instead to the advantages of anonymously sharing operational data which then can be benchmarked against information from other airlines.
