We're admonished from the very first lesson to use rudder to maintain coordinated flight. The ratio-nale is avoiding the violent stall we're told is almost certain to occur if we don't "step on the ball" to keep it centered.rnThis reminds me of elementary math-ematics, when we're taught for the firstrnfew years that you can't subtract a larger number from a smaller one. Then some- where around fifth grade we're introduced to the world of negative numbers-and that hard-and-fast rule suddenly goes away.rnSimilarly, we need to learn good rudder control skills as we are taught in our early flying, but eventually we learn there are times when we may need to ha the way out to one side of the instrument.
