MONITORING YAW

How can we keep track of whether, in which direction and to what extent the airplane is yawing? The quick answer is we should know, from our training and a thorough understanding of the many reasons yaw is produced, when and how much of it we might be experiencing. If that's not good enough, we can use our instrument panel; specifically, the ball in a turn-and-bank indicator or turn coordinator's inclinometer. Some airplanes, of course, may not have such an instrument, in which case the simplest, cheapest and perhaps most effective yaw indicator is a piece of string attached in front of the cockpit.
