OVERWATER RISK MANAGEMENT

Is flying over water riskier than flying over land? It depends. Pilots are fond of saying the airplane doesn't know it's over water (or mountains, or that the sun isn't shining). That's true, and the risk of an engine failure, as one example, is pretty much the same no matter what the terrain. Instead, the increased risk comes from what happens if an engine fails. Over most land areas, there's a strong likelihood of being able to find a flat spot on which to set down. Over open water, everything is flat, but you can't walk to civilization. That's why we need to be prepared.
