The concept of lift isn't hard to understand, at least when considering the vertical plane. Some, however, struggle with the concept of horizontal lift. Let's try to clarify a few things. First, it's important to remember the simple act of banking the airplane into a turn does not change to total amount of lift being generated. While in a bank, however, generated lift is now divided into two vectors, or components. One remains-the vertical lift component-while a new one-the horizontal lift component-is created (it's perhaps more correct to say the horizontal lift component is changed from zero to some greater value). As the total lift generated hasn't changed-some of it has, however, changed direction-the airplane's natural tendency is to descend. We correct that tendency by increasing back pressure to raise the nose, once again producing the necessarv vertical lift keeoina the airnlane at altitude.
