A top overhaul is basically what it sounds like: Remove and overhaul or replace the "top end" of the engine: cylinders, pistons and valves. A top does not require disassembling or other work involving the "bottom end," basically everything else comprising the engine: crankshaft, connecting rods, camshaft, case, and the accessory drive and associated mounting pads.
