Halifax Collision Commemorated

On August 24,1943, 78 Sqn at RAF Breighton, Yorkshire, took part in an attack on Berlin. Two of the squadron's aircraft were shot down over Europe and a third ditched in the North Sea on the return flight. Visibility at the base resulted in the remaining aircraft diverting to RAF Leconfield. While waiting to land, Handley Page Halifax Mk Ils BB373 and JB874 collided and crashed nearTickton, East Yorkshire, with the loss of 14 crew. The only survivor was severely injured. On August 24, to mark the 70th anniversary of the accident, a commemorative granite plaque was unveiled on the Hull Bridge atTickton, near the crash site, with members of today's 78 Sqn in attendance.
