CONDOR: SCOURGE OF THE ATLANTIC

Designed as a four-engined airliner capable of flying across the Atlantic, the Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor first flew on July 27,1937, after which it was used predominantly by the German flag carrier, Deutsche Lufthansa, as well as DDL Danish Airlines and Luft Hansa's Brazilian subsidiary Syndicato Condor. Its ability to fly passengers at relatively high speed over long distances was quickly proven with flights from Berlin to Cairo in July 1938; and from Berlin to New York in August (becoming the first aircraft to fly nonstop between the two cities) and Tokyo in November - although the aircraft on this flight was lost off Manila on its return journey due to fuel starvation.
