The Cuban revolution of 1959, led by Fidel Castro, installed a new communist regime on the Caribbean island nation and brought about a dramatic change in the development of the country's main airline, Cubana. At the time it was using a fleet of Douglas DC-3s, DC-4s, Curtiss C-46s, Vickers Viscount 700s, a Lockheed Constellation and some Super Constellations.
