Samoa Air to Charge by Weight

Samoa Air has become the world's first carrier to charge for the combined weight of passengers and their baggage. Depending on the length of the flight, each 2.2lb (1 kg) costs between 93 cents and $1.06. The carrier has been using this pricing method since November 2012, but extended it to the American Samoa to Samoa route in January after approval by the US Department of Transportation. The carrier's CEO Chris Langton commented: "Planes are run by weight and not by seat, and travellers should be educated on this important issue. The plane can only carry a certain amount of weight and that weight needs to be paid [for]."
