United Arab Emirates carrier RAK Airways suspended all flights on January 1 - the second time in four years. The airline had cancelled flights on several routes the previous month and also suspended services in 2009 in response to the global financial crisis, but had resumed flights in early 2011. The carrier was trying to establish a route network within Ras Al Khaimah as the emirate developed its tourism sector and also had flights to Abu Dhabi in partnership with Etihad Airways. Internationally it served Calicut, Doha, Islamabad, Jeddah, Kathmandu, Lahore and Riyadh. Flights to Cairo and Amman ceased last December 11 and 16 respectively.
