Regular Aviation News readers are likely to recognise the name David Smith from his regular contributions, who was an air traffic controller by profession. His new book is the tenth edition of a work first published in 1986 as the Air Band Radio Guide, thoroughly updated and complete with detailed descriptions of the latest in air traffic control (ATC) technology. The majority of enthusiasts may have a general idea of the duties and procedures of ATC, but no real understanding of how airspace is allocated and managed. Smith is an expert of many years' experience and this shines through his logical and enlightening treatment of complex ATC systems. For those somewhat baffled by ADS-B (Automatic Dependence Surveillance-Broadcast), RMZ (Radio Mandatory Zone) and VOR (VHF Omni-directional Range) he provides clarity, but it was news to this reviewer that CPDLC (Controller-Pilot Datalink Communications) had been introduced to UK airspace in July 2013.
