ARK'S ANGELS

Although only in service with the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm for a decade, the McDonnell Douglas F-4K Phantom II left an indelible mark on all those who served with it. The Phantom symbolised brute force and swept-wing elegance - with the emphasis on brute force (in excess of 40,0001b thrust in full reheat). As a component of HMS Ark Royal's Air Wing it was part of what many considered to be the most potent carrier-borne force the Royal Navy (RN) operated. RNAS Yeovilton in Somerset, which was the original home base for the RN Phantom, was chosen as a staging post by McDonnell Douglas for an F-4 participating in the 1961 Paris Air Show, giving the naval personnel a 'taste' of what was to come.
