Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) engineers are unsure how long Avro Lancaster Mk I PA474 will be out of action following an engine fire at RAF Coningsby. The Lancaster was flying a practice run on May 7 when the number 4 engine caught fire, forcing the crew to make an emergency landing. All of the crew escaped unharmed but the aircraft suffered fire damage to the nacelle panels, engine bearer and associated systems. "The Lancaster crew did a brilliant job of both handling the emergency and getting the aircraft on the ground quickly and safely," said BBMF OC Sqn Ldr Dune Mason. The fire meant the Lancaster missed the VE Day celebrations on May 10. A statement on the BBMF Facebook page said it is hoped Thumper will fly again this year, but it is impossible to say when.
