German company Flight Design, well known for its CT series of microlight and LSA two-seaters, achieved the first flight of its prototype C4 (D-EZFD) European Light Aircraft (ELA) on April 9. The all-composite C4, which was shown at the recent AERO Friedrichshafen exhibition, is powered by a 180hp Lycoming IO-360AF engine, engineered to run on alternative fuels such as 94UL which is now popular with European operators. With a cantilever high wing and fixed tricycle undercarriage the four-seat C4 is targeted at the private owner market and will compete with the Cessna 172 and the Tecnam P2008.
