Bad weather has hampered the search and recovery of AirAsia Indonesia flight QZ8501. The Airbus A320-200, registration PK-AXC, disappeared over the Java Sea on December 27,40 minutes into a flight from Surabaya, Indonesia to Singapore. It was carrying 155 passengers and seven crew. Debris found floating in the water on December 30, was confirmed as belonging to the stricken airliner and later that day Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency reported they had located the wreckage of the fuselage broken up on the seabed, about 100nm (185km) southwest of Pangkalan Bun, Indonesia. Forty bodies have been recovered so far but bad weather has hindered recovery efforts. The aircraft had contacted air traffic control at 06:12 asking to climb from 32,000ft to 38,000ft to avoid bad weather but it was denied permission due to conflicting traffic. Radio contact was lost at 06:17.
