Oxford is known around the world as one of the most famous seats of learning due to the city's acclaimed university. In aviation circles Oxford is well known for another type of tuition - the training of pilots. The flying school that has been located at the airfield at Kidlington, now known as London Oxford Airport, for decades has had a number of owners. In 2012 CAE, which had previously focused on the manufacture of full flight simulators and products, bought the school as part of its diversification into providing flying training. The company now has two primary ground schools to deliver EASA aviation theoretical knowledge located at the Brussels and Kidlington academies. There are others in the US (1), India (2) and Australia (2) providing the theoretic training and flight training as per the regulatory environment they are operating in. For this the company has a fleet of more than 170 aircraft. At CAE Oxford Aviation Academy (CAE OAA) the fleet comprises six Piper PA-34 Seneca Vs (these have replaced Seneca Us, some of which are still at Kidlington and can be used as reserves) and a Piper PA-28, which is used for modular training (more on this later). It also has six Cessna 182T Skylanes that are used by cadets training to fly for easyJet on a Multi-crew Pilot Licence (MPL) course. CAE OAA trains around 2,000 cadets annually on average.
