DORNIER 228 REVIVAL

Swiss company RUAG has revived the Dornier 228 offering upgrades and a new-build version. Fairchild Dornier, the aircraft's previous manufacturer, filed for bankruptcy protection in 2002. The following year RUAG acquired elements of the company, including the type certificate for the Dornier 228-212. The Dornier 228 was produced in two main versions originally, the -100 and -200. The prototypes for each variant flew for the first time on March 28 and May 9, 1981 respectively. Between then and 2002, 245 were built at Oberpfaffenhofen in southeast Germany, and 172 are still in service. In addition, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has a licence to produce the 228-201 for the Indian military since signing a contract with Dornier on November 29, 1983. These aircraft are not civil-certified and, to date, HAL has built 110. The Indian Government donated one to the Seychelles in April 2013.
