Take an Eastern European nation, add a German occupation, annexation and a Warsaw Pact invasion, stir in strong Soviet influence and top with independence and eventually dissolution. On paper at least, it hardly appears to be the best foundation on which to build one of the world's oldest air transport companies, and yet this is exactly the basis on which Czech Airlines has flourished.
